The project
Nestled in this beautiful tree lined street amongst an eclectic group of houses representing almost every decade of the last century, sits this contemporary home, exemplifying a new decade of residential architecture.
The challenge was to maximise the ground level indoor and outdoor living spaces, while dealing with a three metre slope down to a northern laneway.
We wanted to maintain a strong visual connection to the street with its mature treescape, while providing a sense of intrigue and privacy for the living spaces beyond.
As an integral part of the planning strategy, the house has been organised into distinct zones. From the spacious entry that connects the two levels at the front of the house, you enter the ground floor family living areas – kitchen, dining, living - all opening out to the covered outdoor dining area, lawn and pool.
Fresh face
This home creates impact right from the street. The upstairs is dedicated to the master suite/adult zone which is outlined by a splayed ‘box’ with a smooth but patinated polished plaster finish. The smooth finish contrasts more rugged textural elements inside the home.

Making an entrance
The solid timber front door of this home opens to a riserless staircase, also in wood, leading down to the living spaces and up to the master suite. The riserless treads allow views right through the home from one end of the house to the other.
Down to earth inclusion
This striking home's materials palette includes a single blade wall of stabilised rammed earth that rises over two levels at the front of the house and forms a warm textural element for the entry, living and bedroom spaces.
Well grounded
Grey tile floors run through this well connected home, including continuing through to the outdoor spaces. The grey tiles and grey walls are contrasted by the dark finish to the discreet areas of iron ash timber.
Merged environment
Part of this design imperative was to utilise the entire property so the house runs from front to back with the outdoor living area enclosed by the home itself. Plus, wall-size sliders seamlessly open outdoors to indoors, making the home seem even more spacious.
All in the family
This home includes thoughtful connections throughout, not least in the kitchen dining area where the dining chairs are in the same wood finish as the kitchen cabinetry behind them.
Soft and touching
The master bedroom in this home combines the rough with the flowing. The rammed earth wall seen downstairs continues upstairs as the rear wall of the bedroom while diaphanous curtains alongside help soften the look as well as providing privacy and coolness.
Dark and dramatic
In a house that stretches from front fence to back, the rear section houses children's' bedrooms and a family room looks back at the pool and the major part of the home. The dark stained wood cladding on the accompanying rear terrace downplays the presence of the sliding doors in this children's zone.
Stay cool, you're surrounded
The house wraps completely around the outdoor living area which includes a beautiful blue mosaic finished spa and pool.
